History of Ugarit
Ugarit, current Ras Šhamra, was an old port city located on the Mediterranean coast, north of Syria, a few kilometres from the modern city of Latakia.
It was a fundamental city of the great civilizations of the Near East.
Its period of splendour extended between 1450 bC and 1180 bC. Recent excavations have discovered more than 300 tablets with diplomatic, religious and political texts, written in their language, the Ugaritic. This language was based on an alphabet of 30 characters, the oldest known in the world to date.
