Ugarit, currently Ras Šhamra, was an ancient port city on the easter Mediterranean coast near Latakia, in the Levante region. It was a very important city for the Near Eastern civilisations.

Its period of glory lasted between 1450 AC and 118-AC. Recent excavations have unearthed more than 300 tablets with diplomatic, religious and political texts written in Ugaritic, their language. This language was based in a 30-character alphabet, the oldest known to date in the world.
